Job Description

We have an opening for anAcademic Graduate Appointeeto participate in collaborative research in earth surface processes and isotope geochemistry at Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory. You will be expected to provide technical and scientific support in preparing and analyzing environmental samples for a range of isotopes for measurement by accelerator mass spectrometry (AMS).Focus areas may include the analysis of Be-10, Al-26, and Cl-36 in different environmental media; geochronology studies applied to seismic hazards, climate and landscape change, or glacial dynamics, and laboratory experiments aimed at optimizing chemical procedures for AMS applications. Some travel may be required with participation in field sampling expeditions to various domestic locations.This position is in the Center for Accelerator Mass Spectrometry (CAMS) in the Atmospheric Earth and Energy Division.

In this role you will:
  • Provide technical and scientific support for existing research in earth surface processes and isotope geochemistry under the GeoCAMS program.
  • Perform laboratory sample preparations, dry/wet sample digestion and chemical separations of cosmogenic radionuclides (Be-10, Al-26, Cl-36).
  • Prepare targets for measurement by Accelerator Mass Spectrometry (AMS), Inductively Coupled Plasma Optical Emission Spectrometry (ICP-OES), and/or IC (ion chromatography).
  • Maintain a detailed laboratory notebook of observations and experimental methods/findings.
  • Collaborate with others in a multidisciplinary team environment to accomplish research goals.
  • Provide weekly progress reports.
  • Contribute to scientific publications and reports.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.


Qualifications

  • MS in Geology/Geochemistry or in a related science discipline.
  • Experience working in a reputable analytical laboratory with knowledge in handling of long-lived radionuclides.
  • Experience with aluminum and beryllium separation chemistry.
  • Experience in mineral separation techniques for a variety of rock and sediment matrices.
  • Familiarity with the use and maintenance of laboratory equipment, and in general reagent/sample preparation techniques.
  • Proficient verbal and written communication skills necessary to communicate technical information effectively with peers and managers.
  • Ability to travel to offsite locations and interact effectively with collaborators.
  • Proficient in MS EXCEL

Qualifications we desire
  • Experience in mapping and mapping software (e.g., ArcGIS)
  • Experience with ion chromatography
