The Arizona Center for Law in the Public Interest is a nonprofit, non-partisan public interest law firm dedicated to ensuring government accountability and protecting Arizonans’ legal rights. We defend the civil and legal rights of Arizonans, pursuing cases with enduring social, public health and environmental impacts statewide. The Center is considered one of the most effective state-based public interest firms in the United States.

Through the decades, we have:

While our current docket tends to emphasize environmental issues, education, democracy, and healthcare, there are no restrictions on the kinds of public interest cases the Center can accept.

We are seeking to hire our first Director of Development and Marketing to professionalize and expand our fundraising and grow the visibility of our work in the community. The candidate will provide visionary, strategic leadership to build strong relationships with donors with the goal of generating transformational gifts to support the Center’s current and future strategic goals. The Director of Development and Marketing will report directly to the Executive Director, and will work closely with the Executive Director, staff and board to lead all fundraising efforts, utilizing the Center’s existing data base of donors. The Director will spend a significant amount of time directly interacting with donors - both in and out of the office - and will be responsible for administering a portfolio of donors/prospects with estimated gift capacity of +$5,000. We currently raise about $400,000 through fundraising annually and are looking to grow this budget substantially over the next 5 years.

DESCRIPTION OF PRIMARY RESPONSIBILITIES

Overall Job Function: Directs all aspects of fundraising and marketing in coordination with the Executive Director. Plans and executes a comprehensive donor and volunteer cultivation program to support the Center’s strategic goals. Develops communications, publications and other marketing initiatives, to further drive fundraising revenue goals. In collaboration with the Executive Director, generates financial support for programs and operations through grant applications, major gift cultivation, planned giving cultivation, strategic fundraising, marketing, events and increased community awareness.

Direct Fundraising and Solicitation

  • Manage a personal portfolio of donors giving $5,000 or more (or with capacity to give $5,000 or more) creating and executing a comprehensive cultivation and solicitation strategy for each donor in that
  • Identify, research and qualify new prospects for assignment to the major gift
  • Solicit major, endowment, and planned gifts, partnering with Executive Director/Board on key
  • Develop a comprehensive major gift program that includes unique cultivation and stewardship opportunities to grow new and current major donors.
  • Evaluate the feasibility of a comprehensive membership giving program to encourage donor retention and acquisition that supports the Center’s strategic goals.
  • Work with Center staff to improve the existing direct mail program to solicit donations at all

Management of Fundraising Operations

  • Develop evaluative reports for program tracking and management toward annual
  • Report to the Board of Directors on development efforts and work with the board to solicit and steward major gifts.
  • Conduct training for Board and staff as needed regarding the fundraising model and other aspects of working with donors and prospective planned giving donors.
  • Manage the grant applications process, including researching prospective foundations, tracking applications and reporting deadlines, partnering with staff and Executive Director to write grant applications and prepare grant reports and other communication.
  • Ensure regular gift acknowledgement for all incoming
  • Assist the Executive Director in formulating the fundraising and development

Events

  • Coordinate with the Board and Staff to ensure that all events are executed
  • Develop and execute special cultivation and stewardship opportunities for select donors/prospects, provide support to staff in preparation for donor contact, and participate in donor cultivation

Donor Communication

  • Work with staff to develop and execute a comprehensive marketing This includes overseeing and improving external communications (e.g., website, emails, publications) with an emphasis on developing a robust social media presence.
  • Work with the staff to develop communications to donors and the general public about the Center’s mission, activities, and successes in a compelling, inspiring, and motivating way.

DESIRED QUALIFICATIONS

  • Three years of related nonprofit and fundraising experience (bachelor degree in related field preferred but not required), with progressive responsibility and a proven track record of securing visits with prospective donors, and soliciting, closing, and stewarding donations.
  • Experience converting new donors/prospects into major donors, and experience soliciting special, multi-year campaign commitments, endowment, and planned gifts.
  • Working knowledge of donor database
  • Ability to work occasional evenings, weekends and irregular
  • Excellent computer skills, including proficiency with Microsoft Office technology (including Word, Excel, Outlook, and PowerPoint).
  • Self-starter with enthusiasm, a positive attitude and an openness to new
  • Strong interpersonal skills and enthusiasm for building professional relationships with donors, board members, volunteers, staff, and the general public.
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills, including the ability to speak comfortably and compellingly with donors about the potential impact of their philanthropic investments supporting the work of the Center
  • Demonstrate a commitment to diversity within the office using a personal approach that values all individuals and respects differences in race, ethnicity, age, gender identity and expression, sexual orientation, religion, ability and socio-economic circumstance, and record of arrest or conviction.

COMPENSATION AND BENEFITS

The Center offers a generous and comprehensive compensation and benefits package, commensurate with experience, and competitive with public interest salaries. Benefits including (vacation, holidays, sick leave, ability to participate in a 403(b) plan, and health/dental insurance). The approximate salary range is $50,000 to

$60,000. The Center offers flexible working arrangements.
